This is the story of the Brenssell family of Germany, who were early settlers to the province of Otago, New Zealand in 1863.
After departing Germany by sailing ship in 1857 they travelled to Australia and then on to New Zealand.
The story describes their trials and challenges in leaving their homeland and the journey in a sailing ship, arriving in a foreign land and the challenges they faced in trying to create a new life in both Australia and New Zealand.
The tragic loss of their children to sickness and accident is balanced by the happiness they found and the energy they spent establishing a number of businesses and a better life for future generations.
The book focusses primarily on the first two generations of the family in New Zealand, but has additional reference material relating to the German towns the family originated from, including further information on the family tree, Coat of Arms, understanding the German language, origin of German surnames and a brief overview of life in Germany in the mid 1850s.
