When Waikato Hospital was opened in May 1887 the facilities consisted of a five room cottage and was staffed with a caretaker, an orderly and a medical officer. It was affectionately reffered to as the ‘cottage on the hill’.

From these humble beginnings, the hospital has developed into the biggest hospital campus in Australiasia.

Now known as the ’village on the hill’, it occupies 21 hectares, houses 621 inpatient beds and supplies over 5,000 jobs.

The book focuses on the people that make up the hospital community, on the non-clinical staff as well as nurses and doctors.

Photographs spanning more than 100 years tell their own story about this evolving community, while the profiles of current staff, volunteers and
service people create a snapshot in time of the ‘village on the hill’ that is Waikato Hospital.
