Wild About Nature (Waikato/Bay of Plenty)

, , ,

Wild About Nature is an observational guide to nature in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty region and is written to be accessible for all.  Designed as a field guide, it is meant to be taken out on your adventures and will help young and old alike to learn more about the natural world all around us.  Where applicable everything has an English, Latin and the most common Māori name.  However, this is not a rigid reference book – the pictures are what you will use to identify things and the text is my observations and sometimes quirky commentary.  I have had this book described as like having me ‘along for the walk in your pocket!’

This book covers all of the basics for birds, insects, reptiles, fungi, lichen, plants, trees, restoration, weeds, pests, etc. We all look things up online these days but you only see the one thing you search for.  Looking through a book, you find all sorts of other facts you might not have known about, or things that grab your interest.  This book is a jumping off point for anyone who wants to learn more about nature.  My knowledge is eclectic (but I have verified my observations wherever possible) – I am sure that there is no-one out there who knows everything that came from my knowledge and then ended up on these pages!

Unless attributed, all of the photos are my own and no AI was used in any part of this book.  If you would like to keep in touch with what I am up to, the QR code to my Instagram account is on the inside cover of the book.  In places within the book, there are other QR codes, these link to places to visit, videos of mine showcasing birds song, or links to useful information.  At the end there is also a selection of the NZ nature books I love, so you know what to look out for at your local bookstore.

Rachael MitchellRachael Mitchell is British but was  born in Spain the 1970’s.  Her parents and grandparents taught her how to learn about nature and she has carried this love throughout her life.  When she arrived in NZ in 1998 she jokes that she didn’t know a rimu from a flax – there has been a lot of learning since then!

As a career she works as an environmental consultant with farmers helping them to understand what sustainable means to their property – everyone’s journey is different!  In her spare time she is actively involved in native restoration and is a keen (amateur) photographer and observer of nature.  She is also a guide on Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari – taking visitors out to learn about the Ancient Forest, see the Takahē and Tuatara or fossicking around the forest floor ‘Fungaling’.
